This refined neoclassical chest of drawers was made around the late 18th century in Genoa. The piece of furniture has two large drawers and a smaller top drawer. There is no fixed crosspiece between the drawers, as it is integrated into the front of the drawer and slides with it. Of great executive level, the interiors of the drawers are all in solid walnut, a characteristic of fine cabinetmaking.
The chest of drawers is entirely inlaid with the use of wood species such as rosewood, bois de rose and boxwood. The inlaid surfaces have also been expertly pyrographic and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows to create a greater definition of the ornaments and also give three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. On a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini of Parabiago, who brought the technique of marquetry applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels. On the front of the two large drawers and in the sides, in the center of a reserve with a geometric motif stands a large classic vase from which rich and complex spirals and racemes depart, foliate motifs that extend gracefully across the entire surface. In correspondence with the upper drawer, both frontally and laterally, there is a band with inlays with a phytomorphic motif similar to that of the central decoration. The structure is defined by four projecting uprights connected to each other by crosspieces. This play of different planes and levels, which gives great value to the furniture, produces a perspective and movement effect of great effect. The uprights are also inlaid with leafy and floral decorations. Of great value, the four truncated pyramid legs are inlaid on three sides.
The gray marble top is coeval. The handles and lock escutcheons, also original, are in finely chiseled gilded bronze.
This chest of drawers therefore has a very elegant line and a particularly refined workmanship. It is in excellent condition, ready to be placed in any room of your home: suitable for a study or a living room, it is also pleasant in a bedroom or in the entrance, combined with antique furniture and even more so in modern contexts.
