Pair of carved and gilded wood armchairs, Rococo period, mid-18th century, Venice Measurements: cm W 70 x H 109 x D 76; Seat height 46 cm Price: by private negotiation Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity The pair of important armchairs was made in Venice, during the Rococo period, around the mid-18th century. The structure is in gilded and finely carved wood. Each armchair features a shaped backrest, with a wavy profile enriched by soft rocaille scrolls and a crest with a shell motif. The line is typical of the Venetian Rococo style: a wide and comfortable seat, a shaped apron below the seat, richly carved on the front. The carving work on the front base is particularly noteworthy, framing the central rocaille element, creating a basket motif, refined and very decorative. The wavy armrests ending in volutes are enveloping and connect the backrest upright to the seat with continuity. The wavy and curved legs end with a curved foot with a shell motif. The seat and backrest are upholstered in red velvet with floral motifs from a later period but in good condition for use. These armchairs are ideal for reception rooms or studies, perfect thanks to their proportions, also as conversation seats or at the sides of a fireplace, in both historic and contemporary settings.
