Chest of drawers with drop-front in veneered and inlaid wood, Piedmont, early 18th century Measurements: Height 106.5 cm, width 23 cm, depth 59 cm Price: between €22,000.00 and €24,000.00 Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity This chest of drawers with drop-front represents the elegant production of Piedmontese cabinet making during the early 18th century. The commode, veneered in elm burl, is finely inlaid on all sides with elegant Baroque geometric motifs, characterized by curls, volutes and spirals in lighter colored wood species, creating chiaroscuro effects that give the furniture great sophistication. The use of burl wood gives a particularly light color, quite unusual for the time and currently very appreciated and sought after. The chest of drawers consists of four large drawers, one of which, the highest one, cannot be opened by sliding as it conceals a secret compartment that can be opened from the upper drop-front. The front is curved, while the straight sides are connected by valuable rounded uprights, also inlaid. The upper part consists of an opening compartment equipped with a small hinged door (called a “drop-front”) which, rotating on pivots, can be lowered and raised as needed. When open, it provides a convenient writing surface, lined in beautiful stamped and original leather, and reveals a series of six small drawers and three open compartments for storing office supplies and small personal items. The commode rests on four shaped and inlaid feet. A shaped and inlaid decorative element is placed centrally at the bottom. The chest of drawers is enriched with original lock escutcheons and handles in burnished and finely chiseled bronze. This chest of drawers can be easily placed in any room of the house, such as the bedroom, study, entrance hall and living room, as well as in representative places such as offices. It is suitable to be combined with antique furnishings and modern style furniture.
