The case, sides, and crest are veneered with precious violet wood. The interior of the case is veneered with a refined interplay of wood colors, creating a checkered surface with hexagonal tiles. The dial is made of enameled metal sheet, with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. The crest is surmounted by a finely chiseled gilded bronze sculpture in the guise of a cherub with an raised arm. The lower part of the case is adorned with a chiseled and gilded bronze application depicting the god Apollo driving the sun chariot. Apollo is a deity of Greek and Roman religion; God of the Sun (whose chariot he drives), of all the arts, music, prophecy, poetry, medical arts (the god of medicine is in fact his son Asclepius), of pestilences, and of science that illuminates the intellect. The God appears as a young man of extraordinary beauty whose head is surrounded by rays that form his golden hair. He travels the sky, from east to west, bringing light with a regal chariot pulled by four winged horses (Pyrois, Eous, Aethon, and Phlegon) whose names evoke flame, fire, light. The case is also adorned with gilded bronze applications, finely chiseled with rocaille motifs and plant scrolls. It rests on four chiseled and gilded bronze feet with volute patterns. The bronzes are mercury-gilded. This clock, with hour and quarter chimes, is quite rare as it is also equipped with an alarm function.
