Pair of important finely carved and gilded wood pyramids, Northern Italy, late 18th century Neoclassical period Dimensions: cm H 174 x W 72 x D 35 Price: by private negotiation Item accompanied by certificate of authenticity This extraordinary pair of large candelabra pyramids in finely carved and gilded wood was created in Northern Italy around the end of the 18th century, during the Neoclassical period. The structure is entirely in carved and gilded wood, set on a triangular pyramidal base: this allows the volume to be visually slimmed down and the base to almost "disappear" when viewed in three-quarters, making the pyramids particularly suitable for placement near corners, architectural niches, or wall recesses. The lower part of the pyramid widens into a molded shelf with a "palmette" border that recalls Neoclassical decorative language, resting on a rectangular plinth. The upright develops as an elaborate, perforated vertical stem, animated by a rich intertwining of volutes, foliage, and vegetal motifs. Large, vigorously carved acanthus leaves with prominent veins and wavy edges rise on the sides, folding into enveloping volutes to create a sort of natural frame for the central element. The volutes, interspersed with leaves and flowers, lighten the reading of solids and voids, creating a sophisticated interplay of elements. At the center of each pyramid stands an elegant classical-style vase with a thin rim, set on a turned foot and adorned with ribbons and floral garlands. The vase is crowned by a sculpted tuft of flowers that acts as the visual focal point of the ensemble. At the top of the vase, flowing ribbons wrap around the volutes, contributing to the elegant Neoclassical design. The upper part opens into a kind of fan of symmetrical volutes and acanthus leaves that terminate in seven tiered candelabra arms with a slight arch, and removable turned and gilded wooden bobeches. On the lacquered back, two wooden handles facilitate their movement. Each pyramid therefore has seven lights, currently configured as candelabra but easily transformable into lamps, with the possibility of adding lampshades to soften the light and emphasize the scenic value of the object: the slender verticality, the richness of the carvings, and the considerable height make them perfect for use as grand salon, study, or monumental entryway torchères. The overall effect is that of two luminous and graceful sculptures, with a significant scenic presence, capable of dialoguing with both a classic interior and a contemporary setting, where the pyramidal shape and slender silhouette become protagonists. Given the triangular base shape and the vertical development of the body, the pyramids can be placed close to the wall, in front of paneling, or in a corner. The pair is presented not only as an important furnishing element but also as a significant document of Italian Neoclassical figurative culture. Conservation restoration will be carried out shortly.
